Santander ha detto che chiuderà altre 140 filiali, mettendo a rischio 1.270 posti di lavoro. La banca prevede di poter ridistribuire circa un terzo di quel numero.

Il prestatore ha affermato che le chiusure sono in risposta al modo in cui i clienti scelgono di svolgere le proprie operazioni bancarie.

Santander ha consultato i sindacati sulle modifiche proposte e cercherà di trovare ruoli alternativi per i 1.270 membri del personale interessati, ove possibile.

Santander ha affermato che manterrà aperte 614 filiali dopo le modifiche. I titolari di conti correnti e commerciali aggiunti dalla banca possono anche utilizzare una delle oltre 11.000 filiali dell'ufficio postale in tutto il Regno Unito.

Susan Allen, Head of Retail and Business Banking di Santander, ha dichiarato: 'Il modo in cui i nostri clienti scelgono di effettuare operazioni bancarie con noi è cambiato radicalmente negli ultimi anni, con un numero sempre maggiore di clienti che utilizzano canali online e mobili.

'Di conseguenza, abbiamo dovuto prendere alcune decisioni molto difficili sulle nostre filiali meno visitate e su quelle in cui abbiamo altre filiali nelle immediate vicinanze.

'Sosterremo i clienti che stanno chiudendo le filiali per trovare modi alternativi di banca con noi che meglio si adattano alle loro esigenze individuali. Stiamo anche lavorando a fianco dei nostri sindacati per supportare i colleghi durante questi cambiamenti e per trovare ruoli alternativi per coloro che ne sono colpiti, ove possibile.'

Santander ha affermato che il numero di transazioni effettuate nelle filiali è diminuito del 23% negli ultimi tre anni, mentre le transazioni tramite canali digitali sono cresciute del 99% nello stesso periodo.

Gareth Shaw, capo di quale? Soldi, ha detto: 'Queste chiusure saranno un duro colpo per tutti coloro che fanno affidamento sull'accesso ai servizi bancari tradizionali in tutto il Regno Unito, in un momento in cui le filiali stanno scomparendo a un ritmo di oltre 60 al mese.

'Nonostante il passaggio alle modalità digitali di banca e pagamento, milioni di consumatori hanno ancora bisogno di accedere al contante. È fondamentale che a un regolatore venga data la responsabilità di garantire che le persone abbiano accesso ai servizi su cui fanno affidamento'.

Quasi due terzi della rete di filiali bancarie del Regno Unito sono andati persi negli ultimi 30 anni, analisi di Which? suggerisce.

Le banche e le società immobiliari avevano 20.583 filiali nel 1988 secondo i registri parlamentari, ma l'analisi del gruppo dei consumatori sui fornitori di conti correnti suggerisce che la cifra è scesa a 7.586 filiali ora.
